We are asked many times, why do I need to have a root canal?
Root canal treatment is a common dental therapy used to alleviate tooth pain to ultimately save a tooth. Inflammation or infection can develop in the root of a tooth. A root canal procedure removes the tissue inside the canal of a root which resolves the inflammation or infection.
Dr. Chris does not do root canal treatment, instead opting to refer to local colleagues who are endodontists. An endodontist is a dentist who specializes in root canal therapy. Dr. Chris feels using a specialist for this treatment is preferred since they have the extra training and a specific microscope that helps locate the canals.
Teeth may need endodontic (root canal) treatment for several different reasons, such as past trauma, deep decay, cracking or internal resorption. Most teeth that have root canal treatment will also require a crown (cap) cover to provide strength for function. This should resolve any issues with the tooth thus saving the tooth to provide many years for smiling and chewing.
