Periodontal Disease

Periodontal disease is a bacterial infection affecting the supporting structures of the tooth.  This disease begins simply as gingivitis and progresses to destroy the bone, often times without one knowing this disease is present.  We are committed to helping you understand, treat and maintain your disease.  While periodontal disease (gum disease) never goes away, it can be controlled with regular visits to your dentist.  Our skilled hygienists will assess the severity of your disease by measuring the bone support around the teeth and then will work with you to devise a plan to treat the disease effectively.  Most often this involves a deep cleaning called scaling and root planing followed by frequent periodontal maintenance (cleaning) appointments, generally every 3-4 months with a hygienist.  It also involves diligent homecare on your part which entails following the oral hygiene routine you have created with your hygienist.  As with most disease processes, the earlier it is diagnosed, the better the treatment outcome.  That is why a periodontal disease screening is part of every cleaning appointment at Smile Innovations.
